The recent spate of deaths on our roads has been pretty alarming. I have been saddened by the saga, but as it has continued, I have also felt the beginnings of impotent rage at the problem. Why can’t we stop people from killing each other senselessly on our roads? If these deaths were occurring as a result of anything other than our beloved cars, there would be public outcry and the government would most likely be swift to enact systemic change. Imagine if we had three or four separate fatal workplace accidents or murders around the state in the last week. Well recently within a week, we had three or four fatal car crashes, which produced the same net result, and we seem far too comfortable with it.

The annual Australia Day debates started at least a week earlier than the day itself as those with differing agendas quickly sought to take control of the dialogue.

Looking up from Lake Rhona, the mountains that surround it don’t look much like a walking circuit. They are massive slabs of stone, all leaning slightly off vertical in the same direction. The grey rock is broken occasionally by vertical lines of vegetation that clings to the stone as tenaciously as Tony Abbott clings to his hopes of regaining leadership of the country. Don’t let the bumpy 12km dirt road from the highway fool you. Fortescue bay is rarely deserted. When we got there it was pumping like a Corey Worthington party (although there was no gaudy oversized sunglasses in sight, thankfully). We had actually set out from town early and apart from dad running a little late, the plan worked like clockwork (incidentally this is not a wise expression to use if you look Middle-Eastern and live in Texas- you will probably be arrested on suspicion of having a bomb. #amItoolatetostandwithAhmed?).
