Ok I have hopefully done all my swearing about the rise in One Nation votes out loud so hopefully I can keep this polite. I don’t expect everyone to vote the same way and respect any vote made after the voter has taken the time to think about the issues that are important to them. But I have also commented that if you just let fear at exaggerated predictions of politicians manipulate you into acting unthinkingly and without verifying their words, that is a different story. That is intellectual cowardice and I don’t see how anyone who voted for One Nation can have thought about her policy proposals. Her ludicrous Royal Commission into Islam is embarrassing. A worldwide religion that predates European settlement of Australia and has more than a billion followers being the subject of Royal Commission in a country of only 24 million people. As a nation, we are already increasingly alienated due to our failures of climate policy and border patrol. Considering our largest, and arguably most important, regional neighbour is a Muslim country, do we need to give ourselves another obstacle for international diplomacy just to because Pauline and her Reclaim Australia are scared?
As far as patently stupid subjects for Royal Commissions go, climate science would have to be right up there. A vast majority of scientific research has unequivocally found that climate change is a reality. Like the vaccination debate and whether the world is round or flat, we don’t have to say the science is inconclusive because a few won’t accept it. Short-sighted politicians in Australia have continued to resist taking any action against climate change. I am (not at all) sure this has nothing to do with the amount of money that resource companies donate to political parties and is just related to the financial cost of climate policies- has anyone looked at the cost of recovery form climate events? Just this year we have had the Tasmanian Power Crisis driven by a lack of rainfall, as well as a number of floods and tidal surges across the eastern part of the country. Oh, and a small matter of The Great Barrier Reef- perhaps our most important national tourist attraction- dying while we do nothing. Make no mistake, climate change is costing us billions. Many politicians have now backed themselves into a corner somewhat. Any action now makes a lie of previous statements that our existing measures were sufficient and all the while we fall further behind the rest of the world. Why do we elect people this stupid?
