What's been going on?
Following a script almost as predictable as a retired footballer ‘writing,’ a book, a seemingly flat period last week preceded a more successful one this week. I’m adapting to being back at work and finding the time to maximise my rehab opportunities each day. This is involving a lot of low intensity sport with my students, which is something I have been enjoying this week. I’m moving pretty tentatively but getting more confident the longer I go without setback.
I’m really looking forward to seeing the physio next week and talking about running a bit faster and further, perhaps with the possibility of beginning regular time trials to give myself some form of metric indicators for progress.
Used my full allocation of running and riding kilometres and feeling pretty good. I’m continuing to eat well and actually appear to have put on a bit of weight. Not that I’m really worried about this as I have no doubt that will quickly fall back off once I am back to full fitness and training hard again.
For most of the week, my legs have felt heavier than the Indonesian drug penalty but getting better. I am hoping my body is adapting to the increased regularity of training. The leg exercises themselves aren’t getting much easier, but not any more painful either so I am persisting with them as well.
I can now straighten my leg to what appears to me to be almost the same degree as my uninjured leg.
I am playing soccer with greater ease.
I’m also less stiff first thing in the morning
The main lesson of the last week is about patience. I was patient last week when it felt like not much was changing and this week things got better. I am actually pretty confident that my body could handle running further and faster, but won't try it until my next physio appointment, so I just have to suck it up and stay disciplined with the work I can do.
So as mentioned elsewhere, having done myself a pretty significant injury recently, I feel I am making some really good progress towards being healthy and a number of people have said they enjoyed the previous article. While it seems that the word, 'inspiration,' now belongs to people who post nearly naked photos posing on instagram, I hope this page can continue to be helpful to others. I thought I would keep a bit of a weekly journal of my continued journey (I cringed a little bit as I typed that word, thinking of how often it is used by reality tv contestants), including the progress I am making week to week, the work I am doing towards said progress and my observations of how things are going.
