Over the last few years, politicians have spent a lot of time talking about the budget deficit with varying levels of alarm. While deficit spending is common at both a household and national level there are times when it does need to be curtailed. I thought I would take a look at whether our economic outlook is as grim as Joe Hockey liked to portray it and offer some thoughts on what steps could be taken if it is.

I wrote a few weeks ago I had been impressed with the mainly rational response to the Paris attacks and the lack of Islamaphobic bile on social media. I obviously spoke too soon, because it has seemed to increase exponentially in the last few weeks.
Tony Abbot, obviously feeling that his recent efforts at white-anting Turnbull’s leadership were too subtle (note I’m note saying they have been at all subtle, but he and I hardly see the same reality), decided he had more to give, so he stepped out and reminded a lot of people that we (except for Bill Shorten watching his approval rating plummet) really are glad of our nation’s change in leadership. Most of the route is scenic and has less traffic than a Green Lantern fan forum, while the side of the mountain provides a fair amount of protection from sun and wind. After finding more forms of procrastination than a uni student with a new computer game, I finally set off in the mid-afternoon sunshine. I cruised up Beach Road as my legs began to warm up. There are few lights or roundabouts on this route, so for most part you don’t have to stop, but in the couple of kilometres after leaving my house, I managed to find more delays than the NBN rollout.
