Our Prime Minister is truly a vile caricature of humanity. Remember ScumMo’s claim that he prayed and wept over the fate of refugees in offshore detention? Or his professed willingness to work to at least evacuate the children in the lead up to the Wentworth by-election. He doesn’t seem so upset about it now does he? But while refugees may seem a whole lot less human to the government now that Wentworth has been lost, they are still just as human and are suffering no less than before. Medical reports from countless agencies are truly shocking! Kerryn Phelps and the crossbench haven’t forgotten though. And while it’s taken a long time, we are finally seeing tiny signs of compassion and backbone on this issue from the ALP, instead of the supine grovelling to racists that has dominated the last ten years of immigration policy. And predictably, ScumMo responds with a loathsome cocktail of mistruths and vitriol that Donald Trump would be proud of. According to Scummo making it easier for refugees locked up in offshore detention to be brought to Australia for important medical reasons will weaken our Border Security and restart people smuggling operations again.
Never mind that the primary deterrent and defence against people smuggling is the naval patrols of Operation Sovereign Borders which can continue regardless of how long we force refugees to suffer needlessly. And he knows it too, having admitted as much to the Human Rights Commission inquiry. But even if you thought there was a shred of truth to the claim that offshore detention does deter people smuggling,;if your border security policy relies on the trauma of innocent children, it is a pretty pathetic policy. Aside from the moral vacuum of inflicting interminable misery on refugees and their children, but claiming it is necessary for national security; when in reality it is a strategy for your own political survival (still can't believe I can write this sentence to describe the behaviour of an Australian government in 2018); the level of double speak it as breathtaking as it is shameless. No doubt in the future, when Australia finally accepts the true horror of what has been done in our name, the Liberal Party and their apologists will argue that it was the Liberal government that removed most of the children from offshore detention so let's debunk that that now. The current government has spent millions of dollars fighting legal battles to stop children being medically evacuated. Most of them are here now in spite of the government's costly opposition (not because of it's sense of compassion). When he wants to stand against social progress the Prime Minister cloaks himself in his faith, but when you consider his willingness to lie and exploit the suffering of others for his own political gain, that faith is obvious as just another political tool. In reality he is little more than a collection of baseball caps and simplistic slogans. I wrote a few months ago that the headlines and hyperbole would be coming. Let’s show we’re not stupid or fearful enough to fall for them.
