David bloody Leyonhjelm. I detest the man for many reasons, but right now he has me in a bit of a double-jeopardy situation. You see, last year I wrote a short piece titled, David Leyonhjelm has no respect or empathy. Nothing controversial about that statement, I know. But it does present me with a bit of a problem as to what do I name an article about his complete disdain for pensioners? David Leyonhjelm has no empathy 2 seems to lack something as far as headings go (and no, Mercury writers, I’m not talking about the lack of ‘witty’ alliteration you people seem obsessed with).
His recent comments about the pension perfectly showcased his lack of empathy once again. Coming from someone paid a six figure salary for contributing nothing of value to Australian society, his condescending and disdainful attitude towards pension recipients failed any kind of common sense test. I wonder if he will walk the walk and back up his words when he is deservingly voted out of office. Of course he won’t. He will enjoy his overly generous parliamentary pension because he is a colossal hypocrite.
Why am I so sure of this? His pattern of behaviour around freedom of speech pretty much guarantees it. As he railed against section 18c of the Racial Discrimination Act or the uproar over the tacky Wicked Campers slogans, he told us all we needed to learn to take a joke and not be so easily offended. Yet he is remarkably precious the moment he is subjected to criticism or jokes (he certainly changed his view of jokes on campervans when one was used for a joke about him). This is the same man who took a complaint to the Racial Discrimination Commission over being labelled an ‘angry white male,’ the same man who responded to a women’s rights activist on twitter with coarse expletives; and the same man who aggressively reacted to a journalist through twitter because he doesn’t like a photo in her article (imagine the twitter tirade he would send me if he read this). Apparently mature senators express their displeasure the same way 13-year-olds and Donald Trump do.
How does David Leyonhjelm is unfit for politics sound?
