I shouldn’t even have to write this. It should be obvious, but as the well-used saying goes: “Common sense is not that common.” I was driving home the other day and I was in a hurry, really desperate to get home actually. I heard the sirens of a fire engine before I saw it so we were already easing our way into the left hand lane when the vehicle’s lights became visible behind me. After it had passed I moved back into the lane I had been in and continued on my way. Minimal time lost- no big deal. The same behaviour pretty much everyone does in that situation. What astounded me was that several vehicles couldn’t wait for the fire engine to pass and decided that was the appropriate time to perform overtaking manoeuvres. As a consequence, the fire engine was slowed significantly.
Just thinking about it makes me pretty angry. I’ve written previously about how unacceptable I believe our rate of road fatalities is and my thoughts on those who persist in endangering others taking ‘minor’ risks when behind the wheel. However this type of behaviour is a whole new level of ignorance and selfishness. I try not to wish ill fortune on others, but I imagine they wouldn’t want to be delaying an emergency vehicle headed to their home. I know we are all busy and we are often in a hurry, but please, let’s stay safe and let our important emergency services get past with as little delay as possible.
