Particularly after we have lived through the dishonesty and Orwellian double-speak of the Abbott-Turnbull governments, it is easy to fall into the trap of assuming all politicians lie and being largely unaffected by demonstrated examples of this. But that is a mistake. We should expect them to be held to account or we should vote them out at the next election. Lying in court is a criminal matter so when the dual citizenship cases of Matt Canavan and Malcolm Roberts reached the High Court, both men had to admit that the stories they tried to sell us were blatant lies. And while this has caused little anger from the electorate, it should.
We get the government we deserve. This is doubly so with regard to how we respond to gross incompetence, corruption or deceit. If we shrug off events like this because, “All of them do it,” then we are guaranteeing that soon enough they practically all will.
