Thank you to the organisers and speakers from today’s Palm Sunday rally, which focused on the plight of refugees in offshore detention. The forecast thunderstorm never came but the steady rain no doubt kept crowd numbers lower than we might have otherwise hoped. Still, I would guess there were over 100 hardy and determined people at the Hobart event (Donald Trump counted a million, maybe 1.5 million) and hopefully many more in capital centres around the country. For anyone that thinks people go to rallies because they have nothing better to do, I can tell you that I like many others standing in the rain, would have been much happier at home. I also had plenty of other ways I would have enjoyed spending my time, but our shameful treatment of refugees is upsetting to many people like me.
So there we are standing in the rain, hoping that with each rally we bring an issue back to the fore when both major parties would rather people forgot about it. Hoping that each rally will draw even more people than before. And certain that we won't give up.
