I don’t know if I can say anything that hasn’t already been said about Donald Trump and Tony Abbott’s distasteful and ignorant public outbursts this week. While Trump has almost lost the ability to shock anymore, Tony Abbott’s complete lack of irony as he spoke about our cultural superiority in areas such as human rights and separation of church and state was almost jaw-dropping. While not overly surprised, I have been a little disappointed that since the change in this country’s leadership there has been little actual change in policy direction on key areas such as climate change, marriage equality and our treatment of refugees; in contrast to Mr Turnbull’s stated positions prior to ascending to the prime ministership. I was reassured today that our country is now in considerably better hands, as I compared our PM with his predecessor. I am still desperately hoping he is able to actually deliver some progressive change and bring his party back from the far right, but today I at least took some comfort in the fact we have a rational and intelligent leader representing our nation.
