I was looking forward to this game like a nerd waiting for the next Marvel movie. Having seen the Roos live last week, I had been pretty impressed, while the Cats have been very good to watch this season (I didn’t actually see the games they dropped against Carlton and Collingwood).

So the much talked about double dissolution election campaign is now in full swing. The way Turnbull’s approval was going he really had to call it. Unfortunately with polls pointing to a close race, a win for his government will not see him any more free to follow any of the progressive policies many Australian’s hoped he would, if he ever stood for them at all. It is arguable that we have election being primarily fought between Malcolm Turnbull- a man whose best quality is that he is not Tony Abbott- and Bill Shorten- a man whose best quality is that he is not Malcolm Turnbull.

In fact, a game of footy between the the under pressure Tigers and the in-form Swans seemed about as fair as a debate between Jacqui Lambie and anything smarter than a piece of fruit. But the great thing about sport is every game starts at nil-all and you never know for sure what will happen next.

Now that the 60 Minutes 'news team’ (and I use that term with some concern for its accuracy) have been released from Lebanese jail and reunited with their family it seems a reasonable time to discuss the actions that led them to their predicament. I should also take a moment to highlight the initially deafening silence over the fate of the men they hired. It has since come out that they were not included in the deal and are, at time of writing this, still in jail awaiting trial. For my part, this seems a clear example of justice for sale, as there is no logical reason for a difference in the treatment between the news team who were conspirators and allegedly instigators of the kidnapping attempt and the men who carried it out.

This game was an incredible game that really went down to the wire and maintained an amazingly high standard of play which was still occasionally outshone by moments of individual brilliance.

If you are a Hobart resident, you could hardly have missed the traffic congestion problems that have beset the CBD at peak hour in recent weeks. Social media certainly hasn’t and neither has The Mercury, with Hobart traffic generating more stories than the non-events in the lives of the Kardashians.
So how much of a problem is this? Read Full Article
It seems to be a beacon attracting anyone with an axe to grind or a grudge from your history.
Adam Goodes has received- and continues to receive- unjust criticism on social media since his award two years ago. Even Rosie Batty has been target of public attacks, spearheaded by Mark Latham (which immediately undermines such attacks) and cheered on by over-zealous men’s rights activists whose paranoia I have discussed in another article. Read Full Article The recent spate of deaths on our roads has been pretty alarming. I have been saddened by the saga, but as it has continued, I have also felt the beginnings of impotent rage at the problem. Why can’t we stop people from killing each other senselessly on our roads? If these deaths were occurring as a result of anything other than our beloved cars, there would be public outcry and the government would most likely be swift to enact systemic change. Imagine if we had three or four separate fatal workplace accidents or murders around the state in the last week. Well recently within a week, we had three or four fatal car crashes, which produced the same net result, and we seem far too comfortable with it.

There are very complex and emotive issues involved in these debates. here are a few of my thoughts. Read Full Article Untouchables VS Hobart Lions
Showing the same unquestioning belief in my body that policy makers have in trickle down economics, I might have done a bit much leg training prior to the game. Consequently, my legs were more spent than Bronwyn Bishop’s political career by the time I got to the ground and I was relieved to see we had no shortage of players, so I could start on the bench.
