Holly Holm was incredibly impressive in her recent upset defeat of Rhonda Rousey. Still, I was surprised that the tide of public opinion seemed to move quicker than one of her kicks- and hit Rousey just as hard. Where were all these critics and doubters before the fight? I have to admit I have very little interest in cage fighting, but it was hard to avoid the hype about Rousey in the lead up to the fight and I didn’t hear a word of criticism. I believe there were some earlier criticisms of her physique but she seemed to have silenced those by calling them out as jealous or prejudiced. The court of public opinion seemed to side with her and celebrate her strength and aggression. But the moment she loses, people are lining up to take pot shots at her for her style, her intelligence and her arrogance.
Elsewhere on this site I have written in more detail about how quick people are to find fault with the achievements of others when the opportunity arises, but I was still surprised by the surge in negativity towards the previously popular world champion. I like an underdog winning as much as anyone else, but I don’t take sadistic delight revelling in the loser’s post-defeat misery. I hope when she recovers, Ms Rousey can also answer her sudden bandwagon of critics emphatically. Comments are closed.
