No jokes or ranting today. Just wanted to talk about how nice it is when you come across a really positive and inclusive group who provide opportunity for people and ask for nothing.
This morning I went for my first run with Solemates running group. I wasn’t thrilled at having an early start on a Saturday morning but a number of friends had told me some really positive stories about this group so I was interested to check it out.
The magnificent sunrise as I drove in made me feel that getting up early hadn’t been such a bad idea and I was soon at the Cenotaph joining in for a pre-run photo. We were pretty quickly into the run with the group splitting in half so that one group could do a shorter course and the other a slightly longer one. The pace was set pretty carefully so that no one got left behind so most people were breathing pretty easily and able to talk comfortably whilst running.
I have tended to do most of my fitness training on my own, partially so I can work around my own unusual schedule but also as a result of being a little introverted. So, much like when I went for my first group ride, I rocked up this morning a little unsure whether I was going to enjoy it. Going for a run without my longtime running companion, Ivy the ipod, seemed a bit weird but I was quickly immersed in the group and forgot all about her.
There were a number of first timers like myself, but, the Solemates regulars were very welcoming and inclusive making sure they got around and talked to newcomers as we ran and keeping up a steady stream of jokes and banter to keep everyone entertained. As a result the 10k run seemed to be over in next to no time and we were soon (almost too soon) back at the Cenotaph.
